Punching through to the other side of mountains on an spectacular bus ride was how I got to Takayama. A city famous for it's really old heritage buildings and streets and as a base point for many day trips.
Buildings very old with lots of Japanese feeling
Large park & hike overlooking the city on one side, and off to the alps on the other side.
Hugging the base of the park hike were a series of about 10 or more temples to walk past.
Typical streetscape. Lots of places sell 'Hida Beef' similar to eg. 'Kobe beef', a highly marbled delicate steak often served barely cooked as sashimi or fried on coals as a kebab. Delicious beef with the marbling but prohibitively expensive. A small plate of a steak meal would start at $50 which wouldn't fill you up.
