Kyoto - Centre of Imperial History

Central areas of big cities have the big gaudy palaces and stuff. Kyoto's is rebuilt after a tumultuous history - but it's accurate enough to get a feel for the place and the history.

Mosburger is Japan's burger chain.  The burgers are works of delicate art, small, and tasty.  They also have a whole range of rice burger patties and various seafood burgers.

Backstreets of the old textile district near the imperial palaces that required their work.

A sink with auto soap, auto water and auto dry.

Started snowing! Pretty

Imperial palace! The emperor used to sit up there somewhere.

There was a free tour guide who explained the orange paint is a natural pigment which is anti-pesticide and represents the rising sun to help ward off evil.

The silk curtains of the emperor's balcony

Labourers tending to the bonzai trees.  They hand pick each of the dying needles of the whole tree.  HARD work.  and it was cold too I can only imagine the pain in his fingers right now.

Palace gardens.  They used to have a competition with all the imperials/important ppl where they chose a spot in the garden, send a bowl of sake down the river and you had to finish a single-syllable poem before the sake cup got to you

Wandered into a textile meuseum & they had kimono demonstration fashion shows every few hours.

Even had live silk worms! normally they eat mulberry leaf but off season they eat this paste stuff.

Working the loom.  She files small divets in her fingernails to help push new thread in each time.

One small roll of silk holds upwards of 1800m

Kyoto station is an architectural behemoth.  These stairs go all the way up to the upper levels of shops and are fully lit up! really cool looking

Biig place.
